Autobianchi Giardinera Swartskog Kolonial Norway | Drive-by Snapshots by Sebastian Motsch (2014)

Autobianchi Giardiniera | Swartskog Kolonial

Flag NorwaySoon after finding a moment of piece with an adorable MG TF, the tarmac turned into a gravel road, which ended at the Roald Amundsen Vei. Instead of turning left, we decided to follow the signs to Roald Amundsens Hjem. Halfway there we found something we never expected to see in rural Norway, but rather somewhere south of the Alps.

MG TF | A moment of piece at the Oslofjord

Flag Norway“Take a moment every day to find peace. Pull over to the side of the road, turn off the radio, and find peace.”   Richard Simmons

Well, it looks like this quote pretty much nails what the owner of this two-tone green MG TF did.
Fortunately for me as a photographer, he choose a very scenic spot overlooking the Oslofjord.

Gatebil Rudskogen 2014 Volvo | Drive-by Snapshots by Sebastian Motsch (2014)

Volvo + cool = Voolvo?

Flag NorwayAfter showing you a selection of the cool Volvos found at Gatebil 2014 and featuring Christians’ 960 wagon, a question kept popping up: what exactly makes a Volvo cool? And if you managed to make it cool… do you have to call it a Voolvo? Let’s try to figure out the recipe for Volvo coolness!

Some are hiding behind a camo net…

Flag Norway… and others are more easy to spot and take pictures of. OK, I admit that the stunning BMW E30 M3 I posted yesterday set the bar very high. Nonetheless, here is a selection of Munichs’ finest for you to enjoy. Let’s start with a pair of unmolested classics we found in Tomter, en route to the Gatebil event location.

Mercedes-Benz W110 | German Smørrebrød

Flag NorwayJudging by the previous posts this week, one could be under the impression that our visit to Gatebil Rudskogen was all about classic Volvos. Hell no! There was so much more to see! You walk around a corner, all the time expecting to see souped-up drift cars or a mad Amazon. Walking along the go-kart track had many a surprise to be discovered, like this old Mercedes-Benz W110. The sun played wonderful games with the green paint and chrome, but the personal touches of the owner are what made it really special.

Volvo 940 Estate Chrestian | Drive-by Snapshots by Sebastian Motsch (2014)

The law of attraction

Flag NorwayThe law of attraction says that you will get what you wish for.

If you go to a racetrack for the first time, you have to find your way around. Which, in this case, involves hiking through the Norwegian forest. After parking our rented A-Class and putting on some sunscreen, we made the trek around a brand new industrial building. But before even searching for the path leading to the famous Rudskogen Motorsenter race track, we got distracted by a bright red Volvo 940 with golden wheels. This is what it looked like at first sight:

Bentley Corniche Coupé Norway 2014 | Drive-by Snapshots by Sebastian Motsch (2014)

This isn’t a Golf, but a golf club member.

Flag NorwayTrundling along the beautiful Norwegian back country roads at a leisurely pace of 80 km/h is relaxing. Cruising around a corner and finding a classic Bentley Corniche Coupé next to the road instantly turned the attention from sightseeing mode to Drive-by Snapshots excitement.

Volkswagen Type 3 TL 1600 Norway 2014 | Drive-by Snapshots by Sebastian Motsch (2014)

Volkswagen 1600 TL | Damn it or slam it!

Flag NorwayOn our way from Oslo to Rakkestad, we drove through a quaint little town named Tomter. This town featured a rather classy Bentley Corniche Coupé at one end… and a vehicle called sad solution in German on the other. Sad solution? Yes, the Volkswagen Type 3 1600 TL was nicknamed Traurige Lösung. It’s easy to see why, as it wanted to play in a higher class than the mighty Beetle, but somehow just looked like a big one with the proportions way off and not to it’s advantage. Mean people even say, that it looks like a Dackel taking a crap. Oh well, this might not have been what the ‘designers’ intended.

BMW E30 M3 Evo Gatebil Rudskogen 2014 | Drive-by Snapshots by Sebastian Motsch (2014)

BMW M3 E30 | Following a DTM legend

Flag NorwayA winding back country road in rural Norway on a beautiful summer day. The sun is shining, the bees are flying and the birds are singing. Well, they might be singing but… what actually reaches your eardrums is an entirely different symphony. One featuring sounds emitted from fresh air rushing through the carbon fiber intake system, feeding the engine via individual throttle bodies, exploding ferociously  and being emitted through an exhaust system, finely tuned to trigger daydreams of an era long gone.

Ford Cortina MK1 Norway 2014 | Drive-by Snapshots by Sebastian Motsch (2014)

Ford Cortina GT | Spotted in Norway

Flag NorwayThe pace on Norwegian roads is slow. You have plenty of time to look around while driving – which slows you down even more. But as long as the reason for traveling at such a snails’ pace is such a clean Ford Cortina Mk1 GT… we don’t mind at all. Having a smile on our faces was well worth the taking a little break. So, as you would expect, we stopped and took a couple of pictures. Enjoy!

Toyota LMP1 TS010 Le Mans 2014 | Drive-by Snapshots by Sebastian Motsch (2014)

Three generations of awesomeness @ Le Mans 2014

Flag FranceLe Mans 2014. Three generations of awesome LMP1 race cars from Toyota are displayed in front of the Toyota hospitality building. That’s actually a good chance to compare how the design of the vehicles has evolved over the years. They might become faster, sleeker and more aerodynamically advanced with each generation. But honestly, don’t you also think the oldest car is the most handsome and good looking?

Porsche 935 Kremer K3 | Drive-by Snapshots by Sebastian Motsch (2014)

Porsche 935 Kremer K3 @ Le Mans 2014

Flag FranceAs promised in the previous post featuring the Snatch Panda, there are going to be a couple of posts containing more sport-orientated vehicles. First one up is the Porsche 935 Kremer K3 in the famous Vaillant livery. The car was parked in the fenced-off area where members of the Porsche Club Great Britain camped, a mere hundred meters away from the famous Porsche curve of the Circuit de la Sarthe. Unfortunately the security guard wasn’t the most sympathetic person and was neither understanding nor especially helpful. Therefore, I could only snap a few pictures through the fence 🙁

Station Service Fermée Tuffé France | Drive-by Snapshots by Sebastian Motsch (2014)

Lost Places | Station Service Fermée

Flag FranceThere are many reasons why I love France. One of them is the fact, that the French do not immediately dismount the pumps after a petrol station goes out of business. Instead they just display the lowest possible price on the signpost, call it a day and wander off to play a game of Pétanque with their friends, enjoying a glass of red wine.

Volkswagen T1 & T2 | Ring Road Smileys

Flag BelgiumLate Sunday afternoon. We are driving home from a pleasant weekend we spent near Oostende. Passing a couple of vintage air-cooled Volkswagen on the ring road around Brussels brightens up the slow and rather dull traffic. For some reason they always make you smile 🙂

I missed most of them, due to the camera bag being hidden under some stuff on the back seat. However, I did manage to take a few snapshots before the sun set. Please excuse the bad quality of the images. The ride on most new cars is not suitable for taking pictures in low light conditions.

Skoda S100L | Stanced Sunday Sundae

Flag GermanyA hot Sunday in early summer 2010 with a thunderstorm looming at the horizon. I was craving a sundae while driving on the speed limited part of the A6 in my 190E. I stopped at the McDonald’s in Sinsheim, right across the famous Museum. Seems like it was a good idea to stop just there, because upon entering the parking lot I discovered something unique: A pair of Škoda S100L – lowered to the ground, done up nicely in the (then new) rat style, complete with roof racks and odd luggage. Owned and driven by a group of friendly Czech guys. I inquired about their whereabouts… and they told me they are on the way back from a Škoda meeting in the Netherlands! Four people in each car – but to my huge amazement, they didn’t send sparks flying when they rejoind the Autobahn. I drove in convoy with them for a while and had a huge smile on my face. Seeing other peoples reactions was hilarious 🙂

Nissan Skyline GT-R | Top Secret R34

Flag South AfricaWhile leaving Durban on our way back towards Johannesburg, I spotted this neat Nissan Skyline GT-R 34 drift car. The Volk Racing TE-37‘s looked perfect on it and the overall condition was excellent. Must be fun to drift this incredible machine through the canyon roads up to the Kloof.

Chevrolet Impala 4-door Hardtop Capetown | Drive-by Snapshots by Sebastian Motsch (2007)

1966 Chevrolet Impala | Lions’ fast food

Flag South AfricaThe Aepyceros melampus is so common in South Africa, that it is actually called lions’ fast food. The antelopes’ heavyweight namesake immigrated from Detroit in 1966 – and is a rather rare species by now. I found this two-tone painted Chevrolet Impala 4-Door Hardtop in Camps Bay, Capetown. The late afternoon light was glorious, again! You can even see a glimpse of the Table Mountain in the background of the second picture.

Jaguar Mk2 | A red cat purring in the mountains

Flag South AfricaThere might be tales about mountain lions in the area around Pilgrims Rest, South Africa. However, the biggest feline beauty we found was this red cat: a classic Jaguar Mk2. Overall, it was in great condition and purring like new. However, a wee bit of patina on some parts made it look alive and told a few stories of it’s past adventures.

Hyundai Terracan in torrential rain | Drive-by Snapshots by Sebastian Motsch (2013)

Hyundai Terracan + Torrential Rain = Fun

Flag ScotlandWe tried to spot the famous Glen Seilisdeir sea eagles at the Isle of Mull, but failed miserably due to cold and rainy weather. Later on the same day, we encountered torrential rain on our way from the Iona Ferry Terminal to Craignure. The road was flooded and I jumped out of the Hyundai Terracan, armed with an umbrella and my trusty Canon DSLR. I awaited their return to take a couple of splash pictures, pointing the camera at the road. And moments later… a speeding Mercedes-Benz came around the bend. He slammed hard on the brakes, probably thinking that I’m a policeman with a speed gun. If he would have hit the flooded section at the speed he was going, he would have crashed. After wading through the flooded section he even stopped and said thank you. Friendly people, those Scots!

BMW E32 | Beaufort West Limo Service?

Flag South AfricaSometimes location and subject don’t really match. I would have never expected to find a BMW 7-Series E32 stretch limousine in South Africa – let alone in Beaufort West, of all places. But hey, I guess there is demand for a limo service even in rather remote places.
